The following discourse has been translated into English from Bhagavan's Telugu speech as heard on this festival's ashram audiocassette. It is a complete, literal translation made with the objective of preserving Bhagavan's precious original poetic style as much as possible. The words spoken in English by Bhagavan appear in bold black.

DASARA SANDESH

(1st Day)

October 20th, 2001

Divine Discourse by

Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Prashanthi Nilayam

They won’t listen to good words,

Even when said with the whole mind (with heartfelt feeling).

They only give their ears to bad words.

How can such people know Divinity?

The Word (Truth) that is, is being conveyed.

(Telugu poem)

What Does Morality Mean?

Embodiments of Love!

What the modern youth have to foster today are the eternal and true moral values. It is their important duty to protect the moral values. What is ‘morality’? What are ‘values’? Today young men and women have no idea (understanding) of this at all. Due to man’s not protecting these moral values today, young men and women are suffering at a very young age.

The right meaning of the word ‘youth’ is not being given. ‘Morality’ is not an ordinary word. It is VERY valuable. It is very sacred. It is very great. If we are unable to protect this kind of sacred, eternal, and true morality, in what way can humanness be protected? ‘Humanness’ means ‘a life with moral values’. Youth of today are unable to recognize what is their life, what is their goal, what is their path, and what is their aim.

In the English language, ‘morality’ is expounded in one way. Sanskrit taught morality in yet another way. In Sanskrit, the word ‘morality’ is ‘pourusha’. In English, the word is called ‘morality’.

What does ‘morality’ mean? In the past, in the country of Rome, Jesus Christ taught the leaders, who were kings of the country. The kings understood this (what Jesus taught) in the correct way. They gave the name of ‘God’s Kingdom’ to their kingdom. They gave the name of ‘Jesus’ (to the kingdom).

‘Morality’ means ‘recognizing the Divinity that arises out of humanness, and teaching that Divinity to the world’. This is the true meaning of morality. In English, they say ‘personality’ (from the Latin word ‘persona’). But the people of Rome gave the name of ‘persona to Jesus, as the Divine abilities and powers that arose from within him attracted everyone. ‘Persona’ proves the Truth that Divinity is within every man.

In Telugu, ‘morality’ is called ‘neethi’. This word defines the truth of the power to manifest the great Divinity, which is hidden and unknown inside every individual. It is said that the jaati (birth, race, or caste) without neethi (morality) is worse than a monkey.

Morality is very valuable. This is called ‘personality’ in English, isn’t it? In the Roman language, this is called ‘persona. This means ‘manifesting to all the great, hidden Divine power, which is in the heart of every individual’. They called this ‘persona.

Make Manifest the Innate Divinity

Therefore, man of today has to make manifest this great Divine power that is hidden unseen within him. Only the individual who manifests it like that may be said to have a human nature. This is also the meaning of ‘individual’. ‘Vyakthi’ (individual) is one who makes the ‘avyaktha’ (unmanifest) power ‘vyaktha’ (manifested). However, it is not correct to call one an individual if he does not manifest Divinity like that.

From ancient times, man is hiding in his heart many types of secrets (the latent Divinity) in this way. Man of today is only experiencing weakness, not able to reveal the Divinity, not able to behold the Divinity, and forgetting humanness.

Two hundred and fifty years ago, so many kings ruled the land of Bharath. Many thousands of years before Christ, Sri Ramachandra was born and got the name of Emperor. Two hundred and twenty-five years ago, Sivaji become an emperor. Akbar also became an emperor. Even though they (Akbar and others) were Mohammedans (Muslims), they entered into the right kind of spiritual path due to their understanding, and they resolved that the innate (Divine) nature should be made manifest.

Therefore, man of today has to make manifest the innate Divinity within him. Man of today doesn’t even understand what ‘vyakti’ (individual) is. One has to forget his individuality. Divinity should be remembered. Sacred feelings have to be increased. The infinite nature of theistic (values) has to be developed.

What does ‘theistic’ mean? What does ‘spirituality’ mean? ‘Spirituality’ means ‘forgetting humanness (the ordinary human nature), making distant the animality that arises from human beings, and revealing (proclaiming) Divinity’. This is spirituality. Yet, as the education for man of today has increased, he is forgetting his Divinity, developing animality, and only making the journey of propagation and teaching. The meaning of ‘humanness’ is not being understood. Therefore, since fifteen years, it is being propagated that human values have to be developed.

What is this ‘human value’? What is the value of this human value? It is not possible for anyone to say that human value is like this or like that. Some people describe human value as ‘Truth’; some people, ‘Dharma’; some, ‘Peace’; some, ‘Ahimsa’. They are teaching as they feel. What does ‘true humanness’ mean? ‘Completely forgetting animality, contemplating on Divinity, and proclaiming humanness’ is true power.

What Does ‘Man’ Mean?

Therefore, today ‘manava’ (man) means a ‘good man’. This is the meaning. All the Upanishads also say the name ‘manava’ means ‘sacred individual’. One with a good mind is ‘manava’. Therefore, due to there being a manas (mind), the name of ‘manishi’ (man) came. Hence, the one with a good mind is ‘manava’, man.

What does a ‘good mind’ mean? This is true goodness: to demonstrate the sacred path to others, making the ideal life be experienced, proclaiming (revealing) the nature of Atma, and giving infinite bliss. What man is ready to experience such a sacred bliss? A good mind cannot be seen. So, a good man cannot be seen today.

What does ‘man’ mean? It is said ‘M-A-N’, man. ‘M’ means ‘maya’ (illusion) has to be forgotten. ‘A’: Atma has to be seen. ‘N’: attain Nirvana (liberation from bondage). A true man is one who forgets maya, beholds the Atma, and attains Nirvana. Today every man is immersed in delusion and has forgotten the Atma. Then how will he attain liberation? So, first and foremost, illusion has to be forgotten. Maya has to be left.

What does ‘maya’ mean? It is maya to feel that something exists when it does not. Thinking on something that is non-existent, forgetting that which exists, one is unable to reach the place (goal) that should be reached. Therefore, man today is succumbing to numerous difficulties, sorrows, and worries.

What Does ‘Navarathri’ Mean?

So, what does ‘Navarathri’ mean? (Note: Navarathri is a festival celebrating the Victory of Good over evil, concluding on the tenth day, which is called ‘Dasara’. The entire ten-day festival is also popularly referred to as ‘Dasara’.) It means ‘Nine Nights’. The ancients determined the objective that we have to contemplate the Divine nature of this Atma, having the names of (represented by) Maha Durga, Maha Kali, and Maha Saraswathi, during these nine nights.

What does ‘Durga’ mean? ‘Durga’ is one that has all powers. The unity of these three - all powers of the mind, powers of the intellect, and powers of the Atma - they call ‘Durga’. Then ‘Maha Kali’, what does it mean? To proclaim the unity of the three and to destroy evil is Kali. This does not mean that there is a Kali somewhere or a Durga somewhere separately. They can be seen in man.

Bad qualities arise from the mind. The intellect is not followed. These bad qualities and bad habits follow the senses. Due to this, man succumbs to evil and it becomes a bad power. So this nature of Durga was taught to destroy such a bad power and reveal the Divine nature of the Atma. The natural aim of these ten days, these nine days, is to destroy numerous types of bad qualities, bad habits, and wickedness, and to develop Divinity and sacredness.

Today all that we read (study) are only bad qualities. All that is heard are only bad qualities. All that is done are only bad qualities. Then, from where will goodness come? Goodness cannot be seen in man at all. He may be thinking, ‘I am acting in a good way.’ Yet that is illusion only. As long as that illusion is in man, one cannot behold God.

Therefore, we have to reveal (proclaim) the Divinity that is contained within every human being. That Divinity arises out of oneself. It cannot be extracted by going and getting it from somewhere, like copper or brass from mines. This ‘mine of Divinity’ arises from within every man. This only is a big ‘mine’ to man. We have to make many types of sacredness arise from this (inner) ‘mine’.

Today no man is doing sacred works like this. Even though beholding and consulting elders, the answers that come from them (those elders) to us are not right at all. Yet, when one does not have any satisfaction, what can one teach to others? So, first and foremost, when Jesus came to the Roman country (Empire), all of the Roman population recognized him as ‘persona’. They recognized the Truth that Divinity fully exists within every man.

Hence, such a Divinity is present everywhere. They call that ‘Divine power’ and ‘Chaitanya’ (Divine Consciousness). This Chaitanya power is present everywhere. The place without Chaitanya power cannot be seen anywhere. However, man, thinking that he cannot see it with his eyes, does not feel that there is Chaitanya. All good and bad are effects of the Divine. We have to develop the faith that Divinity is in everything.

Today man is forgetting himself. He is forgetting himself! He is printing in his heart all that is happening in the world. Mind is not like a white cloth. All the secrets of numerous births and the actions of numerous births are printed on it. Therefore, the mind has numerous agitations. It has numerous disturbances. It has numerous conflicts. It has numerous desires. Due to these desires, he is forgetting (true) humanness. The one who forgets humanness is not a human being at all.

Therefore, (true) humanness (the Divine nature of man) has to be kept in view today. If you forget humanness, what is it you can remember? What is it that you should keep in mind? The important sadhana (path of spiritual discipline) is to make the mind sacred (pure). You should become a man with a good mind. Then there will be authority for you to say, "I am a human being."

We Should Hear Only Good Words

So:

They (people) won’t listen to good words,

Even when said with the whole mind (with heartfelt feeling).

(Telugu poem)

Man is not listening at all to the words that are said, given with this Mind with so much Love, with so much Compassion, and with so much Mercy. If men of delusion teach without giving the mind (to the whole heart), others are listening to those bad qualities very easily. The ears have not been given to listen to this.

You are so ready, with great interest,

To hear the gossip of the neighborhood.

When the sweet, sweet, praises of the Lord are spoken,

You are not staying steady to hear, oh ears!

(Telugu poem)

The two ears won't stay ‘steady’ to listen to good words. For bad words, they will listen with four ears! This is only that, "Preferences like this come only when bad times arise." This is described as:

Vinaasa Kaale Vipareeta Buddhih.

At the time of destruction, perverse resolves will arise.

(Sanskrit sloka)

So what we should hear are good words only. What are ‘good words’? ‘Good words’ are those that do not harm others, that do not give sorrow to others, and do not give others any type of difficulty. True words are those that convey Divinity, proclaim Divinity, and make weakness distant.

Hence, in the first day of the Veda Purusha Sapthaha Jnana Yajna, as human beings today, we have to walk on the proper path. Its name (the seven-day sacrificial fire-ritual and discourses) is ‘Veda Purusha Sapthaha Jnana Yajna’. ‘Veda Purusha’: Purusha is the right word in Sanskrit. ‘Purusha’ (‘man’ in Telugu) doesn’t only mean the one who wears a pant and shirt. This is the dress of the Purusha, but a true Purusha is God, one who has Divinity. In Hindi, this is also called ‘Pourushat Tathwa’ (the nature of pourusha, meaning both manliness, vigor, and the Supreme Lord).

So, we have to understand well the Holy Divinity, and consider that all the outside feelings are worldly. These are only negatives. The true positive is within oneself. This positive is not given and it will not leave. It is not something that moves, no matter what is done. The Divinity that exists, without moving and without wavering, is the nature of Pourusha.

Learn Moral Education

Embodiments of Love!

Students of today are not making any type of effort to learn moral education. Morality is very valuable. A man without this morality is not a true human being. Developing this morality is true education. What is the use of developing so much, without increasing this morality? We earned a lot of money. We have built great mansions. We worked at high jobs. But what is the use of doing so much? Without morality, all of them are useless.

So, that only is integrity. That only is morality. Today we have to bring out such a morality that is hidden in our heart. It is in every single man. But man is not attempting to do that. He is only making worldly matters arise, such as what is seen, what is experienced, and what is spoken. Bad feelings are very, very sweet to him. Hence, first and foremost, we have to go by (follow) the embodiment of Truth, which arises from the heart.

It is not possible to reach God in any way. He is not one who will be obtained through money. He cannot be held onto through position. He is not one who will be obtained through authority. He will be attained only through Truth and morality. That is called morality and integrity. He will only be obtained and held onto through these two. God will not be obtained nor held onto through anything else.

So, today the Divine humanness of all the young boys, and young girls too, has to be developed. Hence, in the very beginning I voiced three words (points): There should be Love of God. Only when there is Love for God will there be fear of sin. Only when there is this fear of sin will we have respect for morality. This type of fear of sin is needed for this morality to come to us.

Today there is no fear of sin. Love of sin and hatred for God - people are developing these two. One should have fear of sin, not love of sin. This love of sin is not just a mere sin. It is a terribly horrific sin. Hence, we should develop fear of sin.

The true Love in all should be proclaimed. The Truth has to be recognized that this Love, which is within oneself, is in everyone.

Ek Atma Sarva Bhutantar Atma.

The One Atma is the inner Atma in all.

(Sanskrit sloka)

We Have to Develop This Nature of Love

So, it is not that you and I have a different Love. Love is one only. Yet, the right type of effort is not being done to recognise this nature of Love. The life without Love is a corpse without life. Therefore, we have to develop this nature of Love. Without Love, we will not have any praana (life force). It is our true nature to be immersed in Love. We have to earn this.

In what way are people earning money in the world today? You have worked at a job or you have done business, and so you are increasing your money. Therefore, making money is a habit. We are trying to earn it. In the same way, on the spiritual path, this Divine Love has to be developed and we have to be engaged in the business of morality and integrity.

We build ‘anicuts’ (small dams used for irrigation) across flowing rivers to cultivate crops. In that same way, humankind cannot act just as he wishes. There should be control of the senses, which are the ‘anicuts’ of control. The quality of Love that remains has to be used for the welfare of society. Hence, youth of today should keep in view the welfare of society. Only when society is well, your welfare also is contained in that. So, when you don’t desire the welfare of society, what is the use of your efforts?

Students!

Today is the first day of Dasara. Therefore, today I said in a simple manner all that will be happening in the future. Most importantly, what should be achieved in our life is morality. Mind should enter onto the sacred (pure) path. Mind is indeed very sacred. But we are bringing numerous types of bad qualities into it. It has to be made sacred in the right way with repentance and atonement. Knowingly or unknowingly, you are doing so many sins. But after knowing, one must have repentance to give them (bad ways) up.

Embodiments of Love!

Your life is very sacred. Truly you are very lucky. You are very fortunate. Hence you have entered onto this type of path. But, by watching others, one catches hold of the wrong path and you are making yourself unsacred to some extent. So, regarding our company, we have to also keep the right company. It is said:

Tell me your company,

I shall tell you what you are.

All your actions will be according to the type of company you are with. Hence, all the good and the bad in the world are dependent upon the behaviour of man. All of this behaviour is based upon resolves. All of these resolves are dependent upon the desires of man. All of these desires are dependent upon our company. So, we have to correct the behaviour of our company in the right way. Then only will our resolves change into truthful (or good) resolves. These truthful resolves are the royal path on our pathway to Truth.

Embodiments of Love!

First and foremost, what you have to learn today is morality. We have to recognise and practice well this morality. Humankind is useless without this morality. Therefore, we have to keep morality as an aim. If morality is there, we can achieve anything. Tomorrow we will inquire into integrity, which is related to morality.

Death is the Dress of Life

Hence, morality is the first (important point). The man with neethi (morality) like that will become a true jaathi (human being). This is the human race. There is only one Father for this whole human race. He is God. Jesus said:

He’s Father, Father, Father.

Jesus also said, "Father, give me Your help! Why are You giving so much suffering to me? You are the Father of everyone, isn’t it so? But, what sin did I do?" Afterward, he heard a formless (ethereal) Voice that said, "My dear Son! Why do you worry? Don’t worry. All are your brothers. You are thinking that your brothers have given you ill fame and they have done you injustice. This is not injustice at all. All that happens to us is for our good. So accept this happily."

Then Jesus, in a quiet way (quietly), closed his eyes. He said, "Death is the dress of life." Why? Because this death (only) means that a few bodies are changed, like changing a dress. He said, "So even with all of this, I am only changing the body. But this is not death to Me."

Man has no death at all. Bodies are changing, but the Atma is always Immortal. It is Immortal. It is blissful. However, due to feeling Immortality is anrutha (false), you are forgetting this amritha (Immortality). So, first and foremost, we have to know the nature of Immortality.

You are One who is always living. You are not one who will ever change. The body changes. The times change. The mind changes. So, you are not the mind, not the body, not the intellect, not the chittha, not the heart, not the conscience. You are the Atma.

What does ‘Atma’ mean? It has no form. I said this was the power of Divine Consciousness. This means that the form of the five elements is Atma.

Hence, this type of sacred Immortality makes falsehood distant. The nature of Immortality has to be developed. The nature of Immortality has to be kept in view. That is true humanness.

However, in today’s age there are only delusions, delusions, and delusions. Due to these desires, life is being ruined. So these desires should be reduced to a large extent.

Less luggage, more comfort.

If this luggage is reduced, we will be so peaceful. All of these desires are what we develop, but not what we came with. What did we bring (with us) when we were born? What are we taking (with us) when we return back (leave the body)? Nothing was brought and nothing will be taken back. You will leave everything somewhere or the other.

You Are That Which Does Not Change

Therefore, such a Truth has to be recognized first and foremost. Nothing was brought and nothing will be taken. All are like passing clouds that move away. Body has changed. Mind keeps on changing. So, that which changes is not you. You are That, which does not change.

When the body is born, they call it a ‘child’. At ten years old, they say, ‘boy’. At thirty years, they say ‘man’. At seventy-five years, they say ‘grandfather’. Names have changed, but he is One! So, these are all changes (only) having to do with the body. All of these are characteristics of pravritthi (the external outlook). However, nivritthi (the internal or inward look) in this is the same then, now, and always.

Hence, the nature of Atma is the true nature. So, there should be Atma Vishwasa (faith in the Atma or Self-confidence). Only when there is Self-confidence, all victory will be ours. So every man should develop Self-confidence. Atma means one should have confidence in oneself (one’s Self). One should believe in oneself (one’s Self). One who does not have faith in oneself (one’s Self) cannot have faith in God.

You are reading numerous books. But what is the use in reading?

Studying all education, one finally dies.

The education that grants Immortality

Should be studied.

(Telugu poem)

As far as possible, we should give help to others in our life. It is said:

Paropakara Punyaya

Papaya Parapeedanam.

One attains merit by serving others,

And commits sin by hurting them.

(Sanskrit sloka)

We should always give help, help, help, help. The hand also should only help. The throat should only speak the Truth. The ears should only hear good. The heart should only experience good.

Sadayam Hrdayam,

Yasya Bhashitam,

Sathya Bhushitam.

A compassionate heart,

To whose speech

Truth is an ornament.

(Whose speech is adorned with Truth)

(Sanskrit sloka)

First and foremost, we have to develop such humanness. But today humanness is shrouded. There are worldly delusions, worldly property, and worldly pleasures wherever one looks. All of these will move away some day or the other. Even if you leave them, they will not leave you. So, they will always come with you as thoughts. Therefore, thoughts like this should be stopped. More than any other thoughts, the great thought, God, should be contemplated on. Through that thought, all other thoughts will be destroyed.

Don’t Have These Worries

Being born is a worry,

To be on the earth is a worry,

Worldly life is a worry,

Death is a worry,

All of youth is a worry,

Old age is a worry,

Happiness is a worry.

Peculiar worry!

That which destroys all worries

Is the contemplation on Sarveshwara

(the Lord of All)!

(Telugu poem)

At least do it now and attain the Holy Divinity. You are the embodiments of God. God is not separate from you. Man of today is in delusion, thinking that God is something separate from him. He is doing all types of sadhanas to attain that God. There is no God at all separate from him. Man only is God. He is everything. He is forgetting that Truth. Therefore:

I am God! I am God! I am God!

Remember this. Always be blissful.

Why do you keep worrying? You worry because examinations are coming. Or you worry because your mother and father are not well. Why are you worrying? If you do so, are all of these (problems that are causing the worries) reducing? Are the problems avoided? They won't be avoided. What has to happen will happen. You will do what is necessary. So, don’t have these worries at all. Always be blissful. Only when one is happy, that which is true will be attained. Where does this happiness come from? It is obtained from God only.

Happiness is Union with God.

When you are with God, this happiness will be attained. It is impossible to experience bliss while making (feeling) God (is) separate.

So, Embodiments of Love!

When there is time, contemplate on God. Think of good things. Search for the sacred path. Don’t fall into these low, petty delusions.

Bhagavan ended His Divine Discourse by chanting the bhajan,

"Hari Bhajan Bina Sukha Shanti Nahi".
